i3S Course: Optical Microscopy Imaging for Biosciences

i3S, part of our Portuguese Platform of BioImaging Node is organising the 14th edition of the Course on Optical Microscopy Imaging for Biosciences. This course offers the participants a comprehensive light microscopy course that explores the fundamentals and introduces the state-of-art of advanced fluorescence microscopy techniques. The course will flow from sample preparation to quantitative image analysis. It will include theoretical lectures taught by specialists in the field and hands-on practical modules supported by major microscopy companies where the participants will have the opportunity to work with high-end microscopy technology. 

Target audience: The course is designed for Ph.D. students, early career researchers plus all researchers interested in acquiring skills in optical microscopy. 

Course Contents:

• Specimen preparation; 
• Light properties and image formation; 
• Optical contrast techniques in transmission light microscopy; 
• Widefield Fluorescence microscopy
• Optical sectioning methods: Deconvolution, Laser scanning confocal, two-photon, TIRF and Lightsheet microscopy; 
• Live cell imaging; 
• Analyzing biomolecular interactions and dynamics: FRET, FLIM, FRAP, etc…; 
• Super-resolution microscopy; 
• Artificial Intelligence in microscopy;
• Quantitative image analysis.
